Welcome to the Fractal Farm

Established February 14, 2005 (AD even!)

frac·tal  (frktl)  n.

A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. Fractals are used especially in computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature.

farm  (f?rm) n.

1. A tract of web site cultivated for the purpose of fractal production.

2. A tract of web site devoted to the raising and breeding of domestic flame fractals.

3. An area of internet devoted to the raising, breeding, or production of a specific digital image: a fractal farm.

4. An area of internet devoted to the storage of a commodity or the emplacement of a group of images: a fractal farm.

The name came as a place to nurture and grow fractals. My interest in fractals started in December 2002 when a friend gave me a handmade Christmas tree ornament. It was a Ball Mason jar canning lid with a hand painted fractal on it. I didn’t know what it was then and when I asked and she told me all I could say is “A what?” I Googled it and it has been a pleasant journey ever since.

Out of all the programs I downloaded and tried Apophasis has to be my favorite. It produces what is referred to as flame fractals. I don’t really know how to define “flame” in reference to fractals but I can tell you they are different from those produced by such programs as Ultra Fractal. To me they are freer in structure. There are no set types you have to start with and there is no limit where you can take one.

Another fractal program I like very much is Terragen. Your thinking, “What, Terragen a fractal program!?” Yes, it is overlooked as a fractal program because it also does not generate what we have come to expect to see as a fractal, it generates landscape terrains. The power of this fractal program is awesome. Any of the fractals you presently see in any of my galleries with a landscape background (water or land) was generated with Terregen.

I will add more about other programs as this site grows. If you have a gallery or fractal tutorial you would like to add as a link here please do so. Over on the left hand under Things To Do is a link called Links Free for All for visitors to put links.
